2/23/2004 07:46:00 AM|||Andrew|||Monday Recommendations:
Fiction:
The Picture of Dorian Gray (Amazon). It's also now public domain, so you can find the text online. If nothing else, at least go read his famous preface to the book, which ends with, "All art is quite useless."
Non-Fiction:
A. W. Pink's The Sovereignty of God, also now in the public domain. Pink goes through an amazing, Biblically solid presentation of why God is completely, utterly sovereign in all matters on earth. A quote: "Who is regulating affairs on this earth today-God, or the Devil? That God reigns supreme in Heaven is generally conceded; that He does so over this world, is almost universally denied-if not directly, then indirectly."
Music:
Wagner. Anything by Wagner. but this is a particularly good selelction of some of his music. More than any other music I know, Wagner (pronounced with a 'V' instead of a 'W', by the way) has the power to move the emotions and the soul in powerful ways. From elation to despair, his music expresses every human condition.
Film:
Being John Malkovich (1999). In this twisted tale out of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's mind, he explores questions of identity, fate, immortality, isolation, and alienation. All the big ones. It's well worth seeing. And seeing again. And again. You get the point.
I think that's it for my inaugural recommendations. May they continue throughout the weeks to come. ;)|||107755120563304467|||
